Last summer, artists Louisa Vergozisi and Edwin de Klein participated in the Paraspito residency in Pelion, Greece. Organized by the Athens-based collective ististist.project, this residency provided a space for collaborative creation, (re)thinking, (un)learning, exchange, and exploration of common practices and techniques.
‘Paraspito' is a term from architecture and refers to the traditional Pelion ‘side house’. It serves as a metaphor that allows us to critically approach the familiar from a distance, without losing our connection to it.' In addition to the exhibition at ALARM, the Museum Van Alle Tijden associates itself with a paraspito: an exhibition space that is open to encounters, exchange, and new perspectives.
During their stay in Pelion, they explored the metaphors of water as a starting point, and how water shapes and influences both the landscape and (human) life. They drew inspiration from local rituals, natural environments, organisms, plants, and animals, and reflected on the role of humans in a shared ecosystem.
After the residency, they traveled by car from southern to northern Europe, back to the Netherlands. This physical and mental journey, together with the works created in Greece, are shown in the exhibition. The title NAT. refers to nature, but also strongly to water, with properties such as reflection, fluidity, smoothness, and transformation.
